What is pollen?
Bees obtain pollen by dusting it off flowers. While honey offers bees energy as carbohydrate, pollen provides them with protein, healthy fats, vitamins and trace elements, all of which bees need to feed their brood.
Beekeepers harvest pollen in spring by fastening a special grid across the entrance to the hive to which gently scrapes the pollen from the bees hind legs and drops the pollen into a collection tray. Recent research has found pollen is a superfood being rich in protein, trace elements and vitamins, it is believed to have a positive effect on overall bodily condition, digestion, mental health and the immune system.
What is propolis?
Propolis is literally bee glue, it is a resinous mixture that bees produce by mixing salvia with beeswax and foraged tree sap. Propolis becomes hard and brittle when cold and provides insulation for the hive. It is a natural disinfectant and assists with wound healing.
Propolis is an excellent source of polyphenols that are called flavonoids, these flavonoids function as antioxidants. Antioxidants help minimize free radicals which can damage your cells. Propolis has been medically proven to reduce several inflammatory conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, ibs and arthritis. It’s rich in B complex vitamins – combining honey with propolis is an excellent way to benefit from its nutritional value.
